Milestone 1 - Release 0.1 - The Launch

Collecting a rich catalog of Free Fonts for distribution in GNU Linux systems

Milestone 2 - Release 0.2 - Monthly Releases Begin

  • Start a monthly release cycle. structure tasks to reach each monthly cycle
  • Grouping by family (normal, bold, italic, small caps variants of a the font grouped in a single location)
  • Useful indications such as whether the font contains accentuated letters, the euro symbol, ligatures, which character sets are included and so on.
  • write a guide to submitting fonts to the library
    • search the web for free and freeware fonts, list them at Existing Free Fonts page
    • persuade their designers to "Go OFL!" and to start submitting their fonts to the OFLB

Milestone 3 - Release 0.3 - Community Update

A meta project for improving the project itself

  • fix MediaWiki so that ref tags work
  • Perfect the name for this part of the project
  • Pick one of the Project Slogan Ideas
  • project logo(s)
    • (DONE) run a Logo Competition
    • a FL ligature?
    • In, Out, Meta symbols could be used to subbrand the three areas of the project
  • high impact front page to the domainname
  • custom mediawiki theme
  • custom ccHost theme
  • custom mailman theme
  • describe where the weaknesses are in the site
  • how we can focus more attention on the site and publicise the project
  • how to get more people outside the community involved in the Free Font Movement
  • write a OFLB manifesto - see FreeFontManifestos page
  • add the reading lists of typeface design courses to the books page
  • Sorting by category (garalde, didone, slab serif, sans serif, script...)

Milestone 4 - Release 0.4 - Library Update

  • Desktop font association for previews
    • Identify standard font preview / installation tools for each desktop
      • Windows: Native
      • KDE: kfontview
      • Gnome: gfontview
      • General Linux desktop:  ???
    • Test distros to ensure they include file associations to these tools
      • Windows: Yes (XP pro SP2)
      • Ubuntu: ???
      • Debian: ???
      • Gentoo: ???
      • Fedora Core
      • Open SuSE
    • If not, contact distro and notify them about the lack
    • Where no such tools exist, plan implementing them
  • Package up collection and do release
    • A world class designer only needs a dozen or even less really top quality fonts that are all quite distinct and cover all the major categories of type. Should the collection really focus on high typographic quality for designers? Massimo Vignelli made an infamous presentation at ATypI 2006 about this, perhaps he could be contacted to provide a summary of his views on this?

Milestone 5 - Release 0.5 - Release of Fontview

  • Release of Fontview (bovinity)
    • Open Font Library type manager (for activation and deactivation of fonts) (bovinity)
  • Sorting by use (books, comics, greetings cards, advertising...)


Milestone 6 - Release 0.6 - The Workshop Project

Accelerating the development of new Free Fonts with documentation, desktop tools and web applications

  • Perfect the name for this part of the project
  • Collect top freely licensed typeface design and font development documentation from across the web
    • The OFLB wiki uses CC-BY-SA. If such documentation exists under the GNU FDL, it can be collected into wikibooks.org
      • Recommend linking to appropriate documentation Jon Phillips 14:24, 5 May 2007 (PDT)
  • Put call out to existing Free Font developers and ask them to contribute to the RoadMap/Vision for this side of the site
  • List Free Software for font development and help document and improve them
  • Create a font source format that is perfect for public collaborative font development
    • Perhaps contribute to the UFO format?
  • There should be a sensible default for the font headers that could be used for all fonts in the Open Font Library. --Brsma 12:06, 12 Dec 2005 (PST)

  • Make Wikimedia.org accept font files as ttf on Wikipedia commons with licence OFL or PD.
  • Start a Wikibook on "basics of fontmaking" "Fontforge" "Type design" "TTF-Hinting and Kerning"

Future Items

  • Arrange funding for the Free Font Movement via donations and grants.
  • Find a free font that has total unicode coverage, and make the Unicode consortium aware of it, and hopefully have them promote it (and the OFLB and other free font movement projects)
