"A font designer could release their font under an ethical and sustainable license like the OFL and at the same time under an unethical and unsustainable proprietary license, but if the proprietary font is more advanced, this is not helping the Free Software movement."

I think this is a very important issue, and something that falls to the Free Software movement to address. The current situation is that the Font Design community has not benefited from the Free Software philosophy as directly as other fields of software have, and is not as likely to see a sustainability in free/open models as they are structured today.
